Neutron Depolarization Study on the Magnetic Critical Fluctuation in Rb_2CrCl_4

Neutron depolarization experiments on the two-dimensional (2D) ferromagnet Rb_2CrCl_4 have been performed using pulsed polarized neutrons. In the vicinity of the magnetic critical temperature (T_c) the wavelength dependence of the polarization of neutrons transmitted through a sample (P(λ)) shows oscillations around a steadily decreasing value. The wavelength dependence is compared with numerical calculations based on a model of the critical fluctuation. It turns out that this was the first clear observation of the critical fluctuation using the neutron depolarization technique. An explanation for the wavelength dependence of the polarization below T_c is also given in terms of the fluctuations of spontaneous magnetization.
