GdFe/Fe multilayers are "artificial ferrimagnets", in which amorphous GdFe alloy layers and pure Fe layers are antiferromagnetically coupled to each other. A kind of spin flopping phenomenon is observed in their magnetization process. The magnetic structure change during the flopping, which is rather complicated compared with that of bulk ferrimagnets, was accounted for by a model calculation. The M-H curves were simulated by a "fan spin structure model". Mossbauer spectroscopic analysis has been utilized to check the validity of the model structure. It has been demonstrated that the shapes of M-H curves are controlled to a certain extent by varying the thicknesses of Fe and GdFe layers and more extensively by inserting 3rd element layers at the interfaces of Fe and GdFe layers.
