Decay cturves of Nal(Tl) crystals with Tl" concentr?ttions of' 0.01, 0.07, 0.1 and 0.22 naoIe'7 havebeen rneastrred trnder excitation by photo-electrons f'roraa a ""Cs source, alpha particles frona an"'Alll sotrrce and fission fraguaaents froraa a "'Cf sotrrce. A striking difl'erez'nce between the decaycttrve for electron excitation and those f'or excitation by alplua particles and fission f'ragunents isobserved. A flat top of the decay ctrrve which is oloserxzed trnder electr'on excitation is anarlyzedon the bases of' energy transfer processes of' electrons and Vj. centers to Tl" ions reportedby Dietrich et at. [Phys. Rev. B 8 (1973) 589]. A flat top of tire decay ctmrve f'rom Nal(Tl)with a Tl concentration of 0.01 rnole% trnder alpha particle excitation is also observed. Fasterdecay components of 34:l:5 ns (in addition to the taaain scintill?ttion conaponent of' 1504 l O ns) and1585 ns (in addition to tlae unain couaaponent of l0OflO ns) are obser'ved trnder aljcha particleexcitation and fission fragzment excitation, respectively. This finding indicates the presence of'a non-radiative process of' (Tl")" dtne to interactiozu with excited atorns trnder high specificenergy loss dE/Ax. This non-radiative process shotrld be partly respc>nsilcle to the decrease inscintillation efficiency for high dE/Ax particles.
