The phonon dispersion relations ip Mn-rich y-MnCu alloys have been studied by means of neutron inelastic scattering. At the martensitic transfor, mation, the [100] Iongitudinal phonon branch shows softening near the r point. In addition, the elastic constant C1 2 is negative in a certain temperature range near the transi-tion and the structural phase transition is caused by the vanishing of C1 1 + 2C1 2 -This mechanism of the martensitic transformation can successfully explain the peculiar properties of the y-MnCu alloy system and the difference between this alloy and the y-MnNi system. The tetragonal lattice deformation in the y-MnCu alloy may be considered to bc induced by the magnetic coupling force which accompanies the long-range magnetic order.
