The Mossbauer Study of the Ferrous Ion in FeI_2

The Mossbauer spectra of Fe^<57> in FeI_2 were measured at various temperatures and compared with the results for FeCl_2 reported previously. A fairly large temperature dependence of 1/2 e^2qQ was observed, though a little smaller than in FeCl_2. The spectra below the Neel temperature of 10°K showed the relatively weak internal magnetic field at the iron nucleus. The parameters obtained are as follows: 1/2 e^2qQ=0.66mm/sec, δ=1.01mm/sec at room temperature, and l/2 e^2qQ=0.98mm/sec, δ=1.21mm/sec and H_<int>=78kOe at liquid helium temperature. These experimental results are discussed using the following Hamiltonian for Fe^<2+> in the orbital triplet: H=λl・S-Δ(1_x^2-2/3)-2Jx<S_x>S_z. λ'⋍73cm^<-1> Δ⋍183cm^<-1> and 2Jx⋍2.4cm^<-1> were derived from the temperature dependence of 1/2 e^2qQ and the Neel temperature.
