In Germany prior to World War II, Troeltsch and Weber stood as comrades-at-arms, as it were, united not only socially but also academically. Troeltsch and Weber regard the role of Protestantism in the modern world as highly meaningful and stress the significance of Anglo-Saxon society. Together with Jellinek, who attempts to trace the origin of democracy back to Puritanism, they established so-called the "Heidelberg school" of Democracy. But after World War II, under the difficult circumstances in the formative years of the Weimar Republic, Troeltsch and Weber give evidence of strikingly different interpretation of democratic idea: while Troeltsch emphasized a "conservative democracy," Weber advocated a "democracy of popularly elected leaders." In Troeltsch's view Weber's democracy amounted to an approximation to the Caesarism( dictatorship/Authoritarianism) that Weber himself, appealing to Puritanic ideal, has once repudiated. This paper, pursuing the ideological differences between these two Political-Thinkers and testing the validity of their thought, defines the contradictory relationship between these matters and their studies of Protestantism-particularly Calvinism. In addition, it raises the question of the academic importance that both Troeltsch's and Weber's concepts of democracy have today. It suggests that Troeltsch's interpretation of democracy, together with his idea of "Neo-Calvinism," has a significance that needs to be re-evaluated
