The "prayer behavior" in emergency was analysed as a part of a comparative study of regional differences. Five research data on the five enormous earthquakes were included in this study: Miyagi-oki, Urakawa, and Nihonkai-chubu earthquake in Japan, and South Italy and Mexico earthquake. 1) In regard to the question: "What were you doing at the moment of violent shaking?", only 3.7% of the Japanese people living in the above-mentioned areas answered, "I prayed to God for mercy", while 21% of the inhabitants in Naples and 45% of those in Mexico answered in the same way. 2) Factors prescribing "prayer behavior" were investigated. There were four factors common to all the regions: first, the severeness of the earthquake, a sex difference, third, the age, and fourth, the choice of the well-adapted behavior. The probability of "prayer behavior" rose in proportion to the severeness of the earthquake. Women showed a higher percentage than men. Those over 40 showed a higher percentage than those under 40. Those who prayed to God for mercy were more likely to choose well-adapted behavior at the moment of a crisis.
