Educational psychology in Japan has been a subject of study for more than 40 years. Especially after the World War II a number of universities established a course specializing in educational psychology, separate from that of psychology. There was a marked increase in the number of educational psychologists who worked actively in schools, research institutessocial welfare organizations, hospitals, law courts, labor and justice branches of the government, personnel and public relations departments in industry. This brought about a desire for the establishment of a new organization through which educational psychologists could report the studies they made. In the beginning, however, it was felt too early to start such an activity on a full scale basis. When the Japanese Association of Educational Psychology was established in 1952, its primary purpose was to publish a professional journal. All the preparatory works for its establishment were done by Messrs. Yataro Okabe, Keisuke Sawada and Yasumasa Miki, and its council consisted of the councillors recommended by the members of the Association. Mr. Yataro Okabe, then professor at the University of Tokyo, was the first president, elected from among the members of the council. At the time of the establishment, the Association had 520 members, of which 25 were members of the council. The Association thus formed, their journal, "Japanese Journal of Educatronal Psychology" was first published in l953. Volume I was published bi-annually, and the succeeding volumes on a quarterly basis. Current issue is Volume IX. The number of councillors continued to increase -84 in 1955 and 104 in 1957. The administration of the Association was then entrusted to the 20 directors and 2 inspectors, elected mutually from among the councillors. The president was elected mutually from arilong the directors. Mr. Okabe held this position from 1952 to 1957 through re-election. In December 1957, Mr. Okabe offered to resign althbugh it was still during his term of office. Mr. Mantaro Kido (then professor at Chuo University) was elected to the post.
