Recent topics on long-term and large scale studies in forest dynamics are reviewed, and the importance of such studies is emphasized. Many basic ecological phenomena require long-term studies for justification and validation. For example, parameters of tree population and community dynamics must be evaluated by evidence from long-term observation to clarify whether or not they are in equilibrium. The role of episodic events can also be elucidated through such studies. However, for a study to continue for a long period and yield meaningful results, it is essential that effort be organized and orchestrated well in advance. Monitoring in a reserved area is also recommended to obtain the background data and to perceive any changes in environment.
