The larvae of an unstable multivoltine strain in silkworms (Bombyx mori L.) are reared intermingled with those of a bivoltine strain in such a ratio as 1 : 1 or 1 : 2 in number almost under a constant condition. All the offsprings of the bivoltine strain (Kuroshima) in every breeding section are provided with the diapause character without exception. In the unstable mutivoltine strain (Daizo), however, the voltinism of the offsprings is greatly influenced by the mixed breeding. The ratio of the number of the moths which oviposit more diapause eggs than non-diapause ones to the number of the rest becomes conspicuously larger in Daizo in the case of the mixed breeding than in Daizo of the non-mixed breeding. The ratio of the total number of the diapause eggs to the non-diapause eggs shows itself to be of the same tendency. Diapause of insects is known to be controlled by day-length, temperature, food or population density, etc. The induction of the present diapause does not seem to be dependent upon any one of these factors, though the real causal factor remains unsolved.
