The research on "Community and Education" in Japan over its duration of 40 years can be divided into three periods. The first period is the age of reconstruction from the end or World War II to 1959. A number of empirical surveys were conducted in this area by many sociologists of education. These surveys made up the largest part of Japanese Sociology of Education of those days. Many researchers were inspired by the theories of the "Community School" and "personality development in community". In these surveys the community was considered to be a small stable society. The second period is the age of high economic growth from 1960 to 1974. Rapid change and development affected almost all communities. Many researchers devoted themselves to discovering the effects which were brought on by these changes and developments on the lives of young children, teenagers and adults in each community. To grasp these whole effects two research groups proposed the category "Educational Structure". The third period is the age of post high economic growth from 1975 to the present. In the first half of this period owing to the frequent occurrences of many educational problems, the various research groups proposed the theory of "Re-organization of the Relations between School and Community" as a solution to these problems. But in the latter half of this period it became evident that this proposal did not succeed in solving them. Now if the research on "Community and Education" makes new progress, in my opinion some other views need to be introduced, especially regarding the relationship between social stratification in the community and the nature of school as a modern institution.
