The statistical theory of particle production at superhigh energies is reconsidered on the basis of the composite model of particles and resonances. The main difficulties of the statistical approach, namely those concerning the composition and the angular distribution of the produced particles, may be removed by assuming that a statistical equilibrium is reached, within a Lorentz-contracted tiny hot region, between virtual quarks and antiquarks, and not between baryons, antibaryons and mesons.
