The behavior of the phase shift near the resonance is described in terms of a few parameters which are independent of energy. The value of these parameters can be deduced from the experimental phase shift. In the present paper, it is shown that these parameters can also be obtained once we know the potential with or without a diffused edge. The relation between the resonance parameters and the potential is established by examining the energy dependence of the width and the potential scattering term of the resonance formula, which is derived on the basis of the K-matrix theory. By employing the method in this paper, we can check the parameters of the assumed potential by the resonance parameters. An example to show how to obtain the resonance parameters from the potential is given for the n-a scattering. By employing the potential of Satchler et al., we have found that the resonance of the p_<3/2> state of He^5 is at 0.978 MeV (in CM) and the width is 0.96 MeV (in CM).
