Langmuir waves and ion-acoustic waves in an unmagnetized plasma are analysed according to Taniuti-Yajima's reductive perturbation method. Both are stable against modulational instabilities. Whistler waves and ion-cyclotron waves in a magnetized plasma are also investigated. Both of these become unstable and hence form envelope solitons.
