Experimental and theoretical studies previously done on the line spectra of transition metal ions in crysta's are summarized. Theoretical analyses free from any ambiguous quantities are attempted. The subjects discussed here are therefore mainly restricted to the qualitative nature of the Zeeman effects and optical anisotropies of the line spectra. Electric dipole transitions caused by small odd crystal fields and odd vibrations are discussed in detail, with special reference to vanadium and chromium corundum and chromium alums. In connection with the Zeeman effect of the absorption lines of chromium alums, vibronic problems of the excited doublet states of d^3 systems are also treated. Some magnetic dipole transitions in MnSiF_6・6H_2O crystals are quantitatively discussed. It is pointed out that their intensities are of comparable order of magnitude to those of the electric dipole transitions in the same crystal.
