The basis of optimism is sheer terror, Oscar Wilde, 1891 Research on comparative studies of attitudes toward life and death among Japanese and German university students has been challenged on the ground that since immense social problems have arisen at the end of the twentieth century, it is next to impossible to predict tomorrow's world. Moreover, people's interest in and commitment to traditional religion has declined, and a spirit of selfishness has taken its place. As religious pluralism grows, the end of traditional religions can be anticipated. The purpose of this comparative study is to survey university students in Germany and Japan as to their attitudes toward religion, politics, and serious social problems in order to increase understanding of the way of life of modern youth with particular reference to the quality of life and death. The method used is to set forth hypothetical conditions and ask students what they would do if the world should become the scene of turmoil and confusion and people were to lose all hope and direction for the future. This study focuses particularly on attitudes toward religion in relation to the problem of death. The results of the survey are discussed from socio-psychological point of view.
