The investigation was done to clarify which nitrogen compounds, organic or inorganic, was perferentially absorbed by the root from the medium where they coexist. A. The plant, pretreated with NO_3 for ten days after depletion of seed's nutrients, was treated with three mixed nitrogen compounds, ^<15>N-NO_3,[2,3-^3H]Arg, and [U-^<14>C]GluNH_2,at the same concentration of 10 ppm nitrogen. The treatment conditions consist of light (6000 lux) or darkness and high (20℃) or low (4-5℃) medium temperature. Under high temperature condition, nitrogen absorption was in the following order; GluNH_2-N>Arg-N>NO_3-N under both light and dark conditions. Under low temperature condition, the order became as follows; Arg-N>GluNH_2-N>NO_3-N. Arg was less susceptible to low temperature treatment than others. B. The plant absorbed organic nitrogens preferentially to inorganic one. C. Among three chemicals, GluNH_2,was supplied to the plant in the form of [G-^3H]GluNH_2. It was quickly metabolised as a good nitrogen source. D. Consequently, it could be concluded that barley plant absorbs some organic nitrogens preferentially to inorganic ones.
