A study was carried out on the relationship between the physical properties of upland soils and Landsat thematic mapper(TM)observational data in the Tokachi district of Hokkaido in northern Japan. The aim of this report is to estimate the available moisture holding capacity(AMHC)per unit field using Landsat TM data. In this report, it was demonstrated that the AMHC values could be estimated by using subtracted computer compatible tape(CCT)counts of two TM data observed under different soil moisture conditions. As a result of a regression analysis between the AMHC values and subtracted CCT counts of all the TM bands, it was recognized that the AMHC values showed a linear and positive correlation with subtracted CCT counts of band 5. Also the accuracy of estimation of the AMHC values decreased with the increase of the soil depth. These results may be related to the appearance of the gravelly layer. Experimental equations were derived by using subtracted counts from band 5 for the easily available moisture holding capacity(EAMHC)and the total available moisture holding capacity(TAMHC), and using common logarithmic data of subtracted counts from band 5 for the normal growth available moisture holding capacity(NGAMHC). The measured AMHC values showed a one-to-one correspondence with the estimated AMHC values from the experimental equations. It was confirmed that these relationships were obtained in an area different from the study area. The translation of CCT counts in TM data into AMHC values using the experimental equations enabled to construct classification maps describing the potential soil moisture availability.
