Sugars, starch, alcohol-insoluble solids, and various N-constituents were determined in sweet potato plants (variety Norin No.1) during growth as affected by mineral nutrition. The contents of these constituents in the leaves, the petioles, the stems, and the tuberous rous roots from the plot treated with sufficient fertilizers were, respectively : total sugars, 2.1-6.8%, 13.5-21.3%, 6.5-13.5%, and 3.6-6.0%; alcohol-insoluble solids, 80-90%, 62-67%, 78-84%, and 85-94% ; and total-N, 2.56-5.90%, 0.6-4.55%, 0.92-4.79%, and 0.82-1.03% (dry matter basis). Starch content in tuberous roots were 36-37%. The biosynthesis of sugars and N-compounds is conducted at the highest level in the period from the end of July to early in September to serve as a energy source or a material in an additional plant growth and a neoformation of tuberous roots. In September, a large amounts of storage of these organic constituents in the leaves are translocated rapidly in any soluble form to the tuberous roots, and so the contents of starch and protein in tuberous roots increase rapidly in accordance with a vigorous growth of this organ. In the later season (Oct. and Nov.), the contents of these constituents fall rapidly in the aerial part, while their storage mechanism in tuberous roots is promoted more and more. The higher application of nitrogen enhances significantly the transformation and translocation of these constituents, but K-application affects them relatively little. The results from the present investigation on sweet potato plants show a similar phase to those on chinese yam plants.
