Intracellular recordings were obsteined from 220 dissociated dorsal root ganglion (DRG) neurones in rats. The mean imput resistance and spike duration of small neurones (n=112)less than 35 μm in diameter were 92.8±7.2MΩ(mean±S.E.M.) and 6.8±0.8 ms, respectively. These were significantly different from those (39.5±4.2MΩ,2.7±0.5 ms) of large neurones (n=108). All of the small neurones tested had a linear I-V relation, while most of the large neurones had a non-linear I-V relation. Thus, the present experiment demonstrate that the electrophysiological membrane properties ofDRG neurones differ in their spike durations, input resistances and I-V relations according to cell size.
