The paper deals with the preposition o/ob in Evangeliarium Ostromiri 1056-57 (Ostr). This is one of the most important prepositions in Old Church Slavonic (OCS), the chief usage of which are: (a) o with locative normally means 'around, about, concerning'; (b) o/ob with accusative means 'against', but also 'concerning'. We find that in Ostr it is used 242 times. Herodes and the Czech Slovnik cite many passages from Ostr, as from the other OCS texts, and describe the usage of the preposition systematically. However, the inquiry into our data shows that : (a) it is almost impossible to divide all the functions of OCS prepositions so sharply into two groups, objective or circumstantial, as Herodes intends in his syntactic study; (b) there is no reference to the usage of o in J 15.2 in Herodes nor in the Czech Slovnik, even if the Slavic people might understand it easily. We take up the question of its usage in J 15.2. J 15.2 (48 g, 168 a) vbsjako rozgo <o mъne>___- ploda ne tvorestojo izbmetb jo (παν κλημα <εν εμοι>___- μη φερον καρπον, αιρει αυτο.) In this connection, J 15.4 deserves spesial attention. In defining its usage in J 15.2, we must take into consideration the fact that Greek preposition εν, so-called 'maid-of-all-work, is translated by two OCS prepositions: vb and na. J 15.4 (49 a) bodete <vъ mъne>___- i azb <vъ vasъ>___- jako bo rozga ne mozetb ploda sbtvoriti o sebe aste ne bodetb <na loze>___- tako i vy aste <vъ mъne>___- ne prebodete (μεινατε <εν εμοι>___-, καγω <εν υμιν>___-, καθωζ το κλημα ου δυναται καρπον φερειν αφ εαυτου εαν μη μενη <εν τη αμπελψ>___-, ουτωζ ουσε υμειζ εαν μη <εν εμοι>___-, μενητε.) We also know the fact that vb often alternates with o in some usage. But it is difficult to assume that the peculiar meaning of o in J 15.2 simply overlaps with that of vb. O in J 15.2 seems to bear a double meaning. Its cheif meaning is 'around', but, at the same time, it indicates 'the whole, with which the parts are closely joined'. So the phrase 'vbsjako rozgo o mъne' means 'every branch of mine spread in all directions'. As we see, the Greek preposition εν is here translated according to OCS grammatical and semantic rule it-seif.
