"Engo" is now generally defined as 'a group of closely related words, ' which is deficient even as a very brief definition, for it does not originally imply the poetic effect to be performed by its use. "Engo" is primarily a rhetorical use of a group of two or more closely interrelated words in Japanese traditional poems, to express poetic sentiments, implications, imageries, etc. more effectively than otherwise. But in fact the artificial use of "engo" was overestimated, which its truly poetical functions rather neglected. In this paper the reasons are investigated through surveying the development of "engo" and noting the estimation of the rhetorical expression in each period.
