Margaret Drabble, as yet little known in Japan, is a very favourite writer in England, especially among female readers. She is estimated even by critics as one of the best present-day female novelists. Just over forty, she has produced nine novels since 1963. Beside novels she has written a biography of Arnold Bennet and a short critical essay on Words-worth among others. The themes of her early novels are mostly concerned with the way of life of young educated women trying to be independent in society. The Millstone (1965), her third novel, is said to be the most popular and successful work of her novels. It was awarded the John Llewelly Rhys Prize and was filmed under the title of A Touch of Love. This paper takes up and discusses Rosamund, the heroine's way of life, especially the change in her view of life through her pregnancy and childbirth; how, awakened to humanity and true love, she breaks up her hitherto passive and false attitudes to life instructed and moulded by her parents, and comes to make herself independent. In the conclusion is stated how her final decision to bring up her baby without Father should properly be understood.
