This paper strives to make clear the mental development of the young poet Dante Alighieri (1265-1321) as he cultivates his friendship with Guido Cavalcanti (1240-1300), the true father of the school of the dolce stil nuovo. Cavalcanti inspires and affects Dante in his immature view of poetry and love. However, this paper examines Dante's progress as witnessed in his the ?ita Nuova, and shows that his philosophy of life and love undergoes a radical transformation through his encounter with Beatrice and her early death. Through this traumatic spiritual experience of his, a mundane and profane love and life are purified and sanctified. Dante's self-examination and new awareness of spiritual independence from the dark, pessimistic decadence in Cavalcanti's poetry, frees him from his sinful past, bringing him into the bright, promising future as a mature poet of larger stature. Dante's conspicuous awareness of his own progress and development as a poet has been noted in this paper.
