The Tragedy of Hamlet, one of the four great tragedies of Shakespeare, differs from the other three in quality because it is dominated by the revenge theme which occupies the hero's mind and the play alike. This essay explores some incoherent and inconsistent speeches spoken by the characters in the final scene, and searches for some emotional aspects of the hero's mind, tracing the sequence and development of the main events and of his `passion complex', caused by his thought of revenge; then finds that the lack of single-mindedness in the hero's emotional aspect is the principal cause of the problem, or of the artistic failure in terms of `tragic irony'. It should be pointed out, however, that the fact of the hero's total loss of identity has survived for nearly four hundred years and is still alive in terms of `dramatic irony'.
