Many historians have examined the economic relations between China and foreign capitalist countries in the 19th century, especially during the period after 1842. Most of those historians are interested only in the changing characteristics of the structure and process of production. There are a few studies which analyse the commercial structure, and argue that foreign activities were very harmful to Chinese economy. It seems, however, that foreign activities and Chinese economy were dependent on each other. It is said after the opening of China to the external world, especially in the 1890s, Chinese internal trade, which had developed without considerable disturbance from outside, was destroyed by foreign trade. But statistics indicates that the internal trade was continued at least until the beginning of the 20th century. Indeed, the developing of foreign trade was based on and closely connected with the existing internal trade. Domestic flow of goods was almost contorolled by the Chinese merchants who were benefitted by the settlement system based on external credit. The system was especially profitable for the Chinese (import-export merchants). The system was, however, not flexible enough to adjust to economic fluctuation. This inability of the system did much to damage the Chinese trade control when foreign trade showed severe fluctuation. It was the period after the Russo-Japanese War.
