The purpose of this article is to analyze the two French responses to the economic crisis in 1930s and their results, in order to illuminate the fundamental characteristics of the crisis, which was a real bankruptcy of the modern capitalist system. As is well-known, the economic crisis, which took Wall Street by assault in 1929, attacked France in 1931 in like manner. The special features of the crisis in France were not convulsive but deep-seated, because this country had been short of labour power and the rural and urban petty bourgeoisies had been playing an important role in the French social and economic life; therefore the French economy could not recover the prosperity readily. This difficult situation forced the leaders of the working class to respond to the economic predicament in peculiar manner. The one (planistes) proposed the Labour Plan (Plan de travail), which aimed to reform the capitalist structure of the national economy, for example, nationalization of the big industrial and financial businesses, etc.; the other (the majority of the socialists and communists) proposed defensive reform without reforms of the national economy, and claimed for higher wages, shorter working hours, etc.. These two policies engaged in battle inside of the "Front populaire", the former being defeated finally by the latter. This orientation made it impossible for the "Front populaire" government to solve the problem of the economic recovery; after all the "Front populaire" fell down in 1938.
