An interplay between elementary particle physics and cosmology is discussed with a special emphasis on the theory of scalar meson fields and the inflationary universe scenario. It is shown that the chaotic inflation scenario, unlike the new inflationary universe scenario, can be realized in a wide class of realistic theories of elementary particles under some natural assumptions concerning initial conditions in the very early universe. It is argued that out universe is not a relatively homoheneous open or flat one. The universe may consist of one compact (closed) but exponentially large domain, or its global geometry may resemble the geometry of a cluster of exponentially large bubbles (mini-universes) attached to each other. The properties of elementary particles and even the dimensionality of space-time in each of the mini-universes may be different.
