On cooling, many supercooled liquids undergo a continuous transition to a rigid disordered state, metastable to the crystal. In this paper we characterise the fluctuations in a binary mixture of soft disks in 2D as it undergoes this transition using molecular dynamics simulations. The growth of fluctuations in the local relaxation kinetics leads to dynamic heterogeneities. While establishing that the groundstates exhibit very strong correlations between local 5-fold and 7-fold sites and an inherent stress heterogeneity, we have been unable to demonstrate any significant correlation between local structure and local dynamics. As is the case for many glass-forming liquids, C_P is found to undergo an abrupt increase on heating through a glass transition temperature. We show that this increase is largely due to volume fluctuations.
