Hadron Mass Corrections and Patron Transverse Momentum in Hadronic μ-Pair Production

Hadron mass corrections for the hadronic dimuon productions are calculated by using the Lorentz invariant parton model which gives results equivalent to the operator-product expansion and QCD for the deep inelastic lepton-hadron scattering. The dimuon mass spectrum from the Drell-Yan mechanism turns out to be larger than the naive parton model, but the difference is small (typically of the order of M^2/s, where M is the beam and target hadron mass). The hadron mass correction introduces a well-defined transverse momentum distribution of partons derivable from the observed x distribution in the deep inelastic scattering. To explain the recent data of the large <q_T^2> of the dimuon system, however, one needs much more "primordial" parton p_T than that due to the hadron mass effect, even after taking account of gluon corrections.
