A new numerical model of fracture is introduced. This model is composed of brittle sticks which respond nonlinearly to displacements. Following a deterministic evolution rule, small fluctuations in an initial condition are enhanced by the nonlinearity, and randomly ramified cracks are generated spontaneously in result.
