Fusion Cross Section in Terms of the Nuclear Optical Model Potential

A definition for the fusion cross section is proposed in terms of the optical model potential by assuming that fusion is ascribed to its short-ranged imaginary component with a sharp edge. Two examples are given to show that the definition proposed here is useful in reproducing the observed fusion cross sections.
