In a previous work the following hypotheses for a vacuum definition were implemented: a) The infinities associated with the matter fields must be absorbed into the bare constants of the classical gravitational action; b) the ground state has minimal energy. The fulfillment of both requirements imposes very strong restrictions on the vacuum definition (the study was done in Robertson-Walker (R.W.) universes). In the present work, instead of the second requirement, a generalization of the adiabatic vacuum is proposed. It is found that the set of vacua defined in this way includes those associated with the Schwinger-De Witt (S.D.) expansions for scalar fields with arbitrary coupling and for massive spin 1 fields in the R.W. type metrics. Also, two other prescriptions for the ground state are studied, i.e., we define what could be considered as the covariant vacuum and we choose a new suitable quantity to minimize. Even if none of these proposals turn out to be completely satisfactory they open the way to new approaches that we will study in Part II.
