The Hamiltonian formalism in nonlocal field theories once discussed by many authors is reinvestigated. The asymptotic behavior of Heisenberg fields in the extended Yang-Feldman method becomes complicated and threatens the existence of the physical S-matrix. The result is critically applied to the recent string field theory. The latter theory in the light-cone frame well avoids the above trouble of the asymptotic behavior, but there arises another difficulty characteristic of the light-cone frame.
