The Birkhoff-Gustavson normal form (BGNF) is used to study double-well anharmonic oscillators. The problem of divergence in the BGNF series is resolved for all symmetric double-well oscillators with polynomial potentials of degree four and closed form expressions are given that provide classical and semiclassical descriptions of these oscillators for all energies. The discontinuity in the action at the radius of convergence of the BGNF series and its effect on semiclassical energies are discussed in detail. It is shown that, except for a small region in the vicinity of the radius of convergence, the BGNF approach yields good quantum energies.
