Large hexadecaple transition strengths to the γ-vibrational bands recently observed in even-even rare-earth nuclei are investigated microscopically. It is revealed that the property of the matrix elements of the hexadecapole operator and the subshell structure of the Nilsson single-particle Hamiltonian determine the characteristic (N,Z)-dependence of the hexadecapole strengths. The effects of the hexadecapole correlation are analysed in detail.
