Particle Detector Response for Thermal States in Static Space-Times : Astrophysics and Relativity

We consider the response of static DeWitt monopole particle detectors in thermal states on static space-times. We show that the response is proportional to the Planck spectrum up to a factor ρ_n(x;ν) which acts as a "local density of states". We relate ρ_n(x;ν) to the heat kernel for the Laplacian on the spatial section of the optical space-time. We apply our analysis to the case of a uniformly accelerated particle detector moving through n-dimensional Minkowski space-time and shed a new light on the apparent "inversion of statistics" in odd space-time dimensions.
