A general discussion is given for solving the partial-wave dispersion relations for pion-nucleon scattering, while keeping the correct asymptotic behavior intact in addition to the analyticity, unitarity, crossing symmetry and correct threshold behavior. A potential is introduced here in order to express the effects from distant singularities. High energy effects at low momentum transfer, both in the direct and in the crossed channel, can automatically be taken into account if one solves the N/D equations by employing the above potentials in finite strip regions. The strip width may be determined by the subsidiary condition required by the theory itself. An essential difference is found between the l(-^^>1) wave and s-wave problem.
