Wave solutions with axial symmetry which describe the flow of gravitational and the null electromagnetic radiation are considered in the scheme of the general theory of relativity. The coordinates are chosen such that the wave pattern is given by 3-surface χ^4 = constant. It is found that the solutions split themselves into two types, i. e. (i) solutions with open wave fronts (ii) solutions with closed wave fronts. The first case has been already worked out and in the present paper solutions of the second type, for which the wave patterns are the surfaces of revolution, is discussed. In particular a solution with oblate spheroidal wave fronts is derived. The deflection of a light ray which grazes the Sun's limb is considered and it is found that the observed deflection of light does not allow any appreciable eccentricity in the shape of the Sun.
