Restriction on the Coupling Constant from Analyticity and Unitarity of the S-Matrix

Two ways of restricting the coupling constant are considered, one is based on the "product representation" of the S-matrix and the other is based on the analytic properties of the "Jost function". The former gives only a certain inequality to the value of the coupling constant, and it becomes indefinite within the interval allowed, while the latter, in the case when the relevant pole is due to a composite particle, gives a definite value of the coupling constant, but in the case when the pole is due to an elementary particle the value of the coupling constant becomes indefinite within the interval allowed. The connexion between the two methods is also discussed.
