The purpose of this paper is to give a derivation of the formula for rearrangement nuclear reactions which describe both direct and compound processes from a unified point of view. The formula is derived in a similar way to that for the scattering of a nucleon by nuclei. The distortion of wave functions for a particle which is concerned in the rearrangement reaction is given by the optical potential determined from the elastic scattering of the particle by nuclei. Then the transition matrix element is written as a sum of two contributions; one from the direct process and the other from the compound process. If the energy of the incident particle is so high that the compound nucleus has closely spaced energy levels, the cross section should be averaged over a suitable energy interval. And it is assumed that there is no coherence between the phases of the nearby compound nucleus levels and therefore the interference term between the direct and compound nucleus processes vanishes. Then, it is shown that the contribution of the compound nucleus reaction is in accordance with the results of Bethe and Hauser-Feshbach described by the statistical theory. The formal theory of the rearrangement nuclear reaction is applied to the deuteron stripping reaction. In this case, the formula which gives the effective deuteronnucleus interaction is derived.
