A microscopic theory of scattering of light from liquids is developed. The analogy between the spectral intensity of scattered light and the differential cross section of neutron scattering is examined. On the basis of microscopic calculations of the refractive index of liquids, a general expression for the spectral intensity is obtained as a perturbation series in αρ, polarizability per unit volume of a liquid. The result is shown as a generalized form of the Landau-Placzek theory and expressed in terms of multiple space-time correlation functions.
