On the Renormalization of the Axial Vector β-Decay Coupling

The renormalization effect in β-decay, g_A/g_V=1.25, is calculated under the assumptions of the conservation of the vector current, the equality of the bare vector and the axial vector coupling constants. Based on the S-matrix theory, an approximate formula to calculate the ratio g_A/g_V is given, which needs only knowledge of experimental data on several partial wave amplitudes of N-N^^- scattering. The numerical calculation, however, is made by the use of N-N^^- scattering amplitudes calculated from π,ρ and ω meson exchange contributions. The result obtained is much the same as the one obtained from the perturbation calculation. In connection with this problem a possibility of the existence of an axial vector meson is discussed.
