Resonance in the Elastic Scattering with Exchange of Slow Electrons by Helium Atoms : A Calculation of the Jost Function

Herzenberg and Lau recently found the appearance of a resonance in the low-energy electron-helium scattering when they modified the exchange interaction by multiplying a factor (1+Δ) with Δ≠0. In order to see the situation under the unmodified interaction (Δ=0) clearly, the Jost function for the same scattering problem has been calculated. It turns out that the Jost function does not change smoothly as Δ goes to zero. Hence the extrapolation to the case Δ=0 is impossible. For the unmodified interaction (Δ=0), with the simple HartreeFock-type target function we have used, the Jost function always vanishes and thus we can neither prove nor disprove the presence of the resonance in this scattering problem.
