The real part of the phenomenological local optical potential for proton contains a term 0.4Z/A^<1/3> times a Woods-Saxon form factor. It has been shown that the nonlocality of the potential and intermediate Coulomb excitations are responsible for such a term. The former is predominant in the nuclear interior but on the surface the contribution of the latter is significant. The nonlocality term falls faster than a Woods-Saxon well; however, when the contribution due to the Coulomb excitation is added, the resultant compares well with the phenomenological value.
