We present an atomic picture of quantized circulation of repulsively interacting Bose particles in a one-dimensional ring. The flow of the particles along the ring is quantized and metastable at sufficiently low temperatures, due to the interparticle interaction. By contrast, an ideal Bose gas does not exhibit metastability. This is concluded without the use of a complex order parameter, or a macroscopic wave function. An explicit expression of N-body states confirms that only the wave function of the ground state of the relative motion is consistent with the Feynman wave function of quantized circulation.
