Oscillatory phenomena in various modes are widely observable in systems of living organism from molecular to ecological levels. Though oscillations in a sinusoidal profile are most frequently seen as a behavior of continuously changing variable, other types of periodic events such as pulsed oscillation are also generated in some biological activities. Pulsed oscillation has been most clearly observed, for instance, on the periodic secretion of sexual hormones. Detailed molecular mechanism by which pulsed oscillations are brought about in metabolic pathway has not yet fully understood. In the present study, pulsed oscillations generated from various systems governed by nonlinear ordinary differential equations have been subjected to investigate the common feature of the equations necessary to the pulsed oscillation. As a result, it was concluded that the nonlinear equations are required for pulsed oscillation to include terms which represent the positive or negative feedback loop, or positive feedfoward loop in a metabolic pathway, and that such the structure of metabolic pathway with feedback or feedfoward loop may exist in the real living organism. Some questions with respect to the pulsed generation of action potential in sino-atrium node and impulse transmission in the heart function were partly discussed on the base of the present results.
