This paper briefly explores several linguistic phenomena believed to cause lexical resemblances across language boundaries; in particular, between words which are not (or probably not) of the same historical origin. After discussing theories of onomatopoeia, derivation of kinship terms from baby-talk, and phonaesthesia (sound-symbolism), it goes on to consider resemblances which are apparently due to chance. Finally, it attempts to relate these theoretical observations to their practical mnemonic value, from the point of view of the language learner. Although various languages are cited, the attention of this paper is primarily focused on relationships between Japanese, English, and Spanish.
