The purpose of this short paper is to draw attention to some of the advantages ("positive transfer") and disadvantages ("negative transfer") experienced by learners and teachers when they encounter items of vocabulary which are, or appear to be, common to both languages. In order to provide greater scope for comparison, the discussion has been extended beyond loanwords to include cognates, i.e. words inherited, adopted or compounded from a common source language. Particular emphasis is placed on lexical relationships between English and Japanese, and between English and the Romance languages. The discussion is followed by a brief review of pedagogical exercises which make use of loanwords as a stimulus for language activity in the classroom. Reference is made to the following classification of loanwords : - Type One : unassimilated; Type Two : semi-assimilated; Type Three : fully assimilated; Type Four : pseudo-loans and loanblends. These are given somewhat more detailed treatment in an earlier paper, Loanwords : a Global View (FWJC Studies, June 1991).
