The firefly squid, W. scintillans, has three visual pigments with absorbance maxima at 471nm, 484nm and 501nm. In the specific region of the ventral retina receiving downwelling light, the distal outer segment layer contains the 471 nm visual pigment, based on 4-hydroxyretinal (A4 pigment), and the proximal outer segment layer contains the 501nm visual pigment, based on 3-dehydroretinal (A2 pigment). The distal A4 pigment layer can act as a color filter on the photoreceptor cells containing A2 pigment. It is estimated that this filtering effect shifts the spectral sensitivity of the proximal photoreceptors from 501nm to 550nm.
